The MusiColour Composition Workshop

This one-day workshop for Primary Schools encourages participants to compose, perform and record an original piece of music, inspired by van Gogh’s “The Starry Night” .

Assembly

The day begins with a 20-minute whole-school assembly with the theme of "Colourful Music!".  As well as presenting the outline for the day and setting the task for the workshops, this is an opportunity for pupils to hear music from around the world, that expresses colour, landscape and mood.

Composition Workshop

Participants bring along their own instruments and begin this session by exploring different ways of producing sounds on their instruments represented (conventional or otherwise…).  This is followed by a discussion on musical colour, including light and shade, emotions, moods dischord/conchord etc.

The group then looks in-depth at van Gogh's "The Starry Night", discussing possible scenarios before, during and after the time captured by this picture.   As this session progresses, the group are helped to compose and rehearse a 5-10 minute piece of music (scored appropriately to the needs of the group).

Recording Session

In the afternoon, the composition is recorded onto CD using mobile recording facilities.  All participants have the opportunity to learn a little about the recording process, from  microphone placement through to mixing and mastering.
